Sephora at Kohl's

The Sephora at Kohl’s partnership has made its debut. The two retailers have revealed their first shop-in-shop location at a Kohl’s location in Ramsey, N.J., on Aug. 6 after announcing their partnership in December. The partnership brings more than 125 prestige beauty brands to the mid-tier department store, with 70 more shop-in-shop locations set to open nationwide this month. By 2023, there will be 850 locations.

The Sephora at Kohl’s partnership is just the latest major deal in the beauty industry. Last month, Ulta Beauty and Target revealed their shop-in-shop partnership, which brings more than 50 beauty brands to 100-plus Target locations across the country.

What is Sephora?

Sephora is a French beauty retailer that sells high-end makeup, skincare, hair products, fragrance and other items. Sephora has more than 2,700 stores in 35 countries. It opened its first U.S. store in New York in 1998. It is owned by Paris-based luxury goods group LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

The new locations inside Kohl's stores take up about 2,500 square feet of space. 

The first collection of Sephora at Kohl's locations are starting to open up this month across more than 70 stores throughout the United States.

Both brands have been busy at work perfecting the 2,500 square-foot space shoppers will see dedicated to Sephora beauty brands — from Fenty Beauty and ILIA to Milk Makeup and Lancôme — at nationwide Kohl's stores. Even more exciting: Sephora and Kohl's revealed that customers will earn double rewards points for both Sephora's Beauty Insider program and the Kohl's rewards program when stocking up on beauty buys at the new shops.

Right now, customers can find the closest Sephora at Kohl's location nearby by referencing the interactive store map, which lists New York, New Jersey, California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, Virginia, Colorado, Montana and more as some of the first states to welcome the brand-new beauty destination.

In the fall, they plan to expand into 200 stores total and by 2023, they expect to be in at least 850 Kohl's. But don't worry: anyone awaiting their own local Sephora at Kohl's opening can still get in on the excitement by shopping Sephora products at Kohls.com.

The List of Sephora at Kohl's Locations

You can find the full list of Sephora at Kohl's locations on Kohl's corporate website. If you're bummed that there isn't one within driving distance just yet, don't fret. The two retailers plan to open a whopping 400 Sephora at Kohl's locations by 2022 and an even more impressive 850 locations by 2023. (Talk about an expanded customer base.) And starting August 1, you can shop Sephora at Kohl's online exclusively at kohls.com — mirrored by all of the same, detailed breakdowns and community reviews you'd find on sephora.com.

And get this, for all of you rewards-obsessed shoppers, all of your Sephora at Kohl's purchases will qualify for both retailers' rewards programs, Beauty Insider and Kohl's Cash. That is quite literally a win-win situation if I've ever called one. 

What does the partnership mean? 

Kohl's has expanded its beauty department both in-store and online. 

More than 100 beauty brands will be part of Kohl's locations including Fenty Beauty, Drunk Elephant, Bare Minerals, Ilia. More than 125 beauty brands became available through Kohl's website at the beginning of August. 

Kohl's customers can buy in-store at the locations with a Sephora or buy online and have it sent to their local store for pickup. Sephora-trained staff will work in those shops. 

Kohl's and Sephora first announced the partnership in December of 2020. 

The new partnership marks another investment in its stores for Kohl's. 

The company, with its more than 1,100 stores in 49 states, has maintained that one of its strengths is its strong brick-and-mortar presence. While the majority of Sephora stores are found inside malls, Kohl's stores are mostly off-mall. 

Kohl's views the partnership with Sephora as an opportunity to attract younger customers into its stores. The two retailers have said that there is little overlap with their existing customers. 

Growing its beauty business is part of Kohl's long-term strategic plan. The company has said it wants to build a leading beauty business.

Shop Your Favorite Sephora Brands Inside Kohl's

By the end of this fall, you can shop all of your favorite Sephora products at 200 Kohl's stores via a special, branded entrance, to boot. "You really feel like you are in a Sephora, from the lighting, brand assortment, elevated fixturing, and trained associates," Doug Howe, Kohl's chief merchandising officer, tells Allure over a phone call. 

The goal of this special collaboration is very much to treat, curate, and update Sephora at Kohl's in the same ways as a standalone Sephora store would be. The added bonus, of course, is offering Kohl's consumers — especially those who have never stepped foot in Sephora, oftentimes because they don't live near one — the total beauty package. 

Kohl's Rewards + Sephora Beauty Insider

You will be able to earn Sephora Beauty Insider points at Kohl’s.

Regardless of whether you buy Sephora products at Sephora stores, JCPenney or Kohl’s, you’ll be able to earn points for Beauty Insider, their much-loved loyalty program.

Simply give the cashier the email address associated with your Beauty Insider account at checkout to get the points.

You’ll also be able to earn Kohl’s Rewards — which turn into Kohl’s Cash.

The free Kohl’s Rewards loyalty program lets you earn 5% cash back on every purchase, any day, online and in store — and this applies to the new Sephora mini-stores!

There are lots of reasons why you should sign up for Kohl’s Rewards, and now one of them is that you can earn on all your Sephora @ Kohl’s items.

Those Rewards add up to Kohl’s Cash, and while you can’t spend (or directly earn) Kohl’s Cash on Sephora products, you’ll be able to spend those Rewards on just about everything else you could want at Kohl’s.
