Sephora Brands

If you’re a Sephora insider or you just love how the store carries everything beauty related in one place, you’ll love the ease and big selection of clean beauty brands at Sephora. Shop your favourite brands at Sephora.

Shop Sephora Brands From Kohl's

The Sephora at Kohl’s partnership has made its debut. The two retailers have revealed their first shop-in-shop location at a Kohl’s location in Ramsey, N.J., on Aug. 6 after announcing their partnership in December. The partnership brings more than 125 prestige beauty brands to the mid-tier department store, with 70 more shop-in-shop locations set to open nationwide this month. By 2023, there will be 850 locations.

The Sephora at Kohl’s partnership is just the latest major deal in the beauty industry. Last month, Ulta Beauty and Target revealed their shop-in-shop partnership, which brings more than 50 beauty brands to 100-plus Target locations across the country.

Sephora has around 500 of its 2,600 stores in the Americas. While it’s an accomplishment to go from announcement to launch in less than a year, the delta variant of Covid-19 is causing hot spots to flare up throughout the country and around the world. It’s a difficult time to entice consumers to try cosmetics before they buy, which has always been a key differentiator for Sephora.

Plus, there is competitive pressure. Target is launching its partnership with cosmetic retailer Ulta Beauty in August as well with its first 100 shop-in-shops.

Target plans to open 800 Ulta shop-in-shops of around 1,000 square feet over the next several years, offering more than 50 prestige brands. The Ulta shop-in-shops will not replace Target’s current cosmetic offering, but add to it.

For those without a store nearby, select Sephora products will be sold on Kohl’s existing website and can be added to customers’ carts along with other Kohl’s items. Customers will also be able to order Sephora products to pick up at their local Kohl’s store whether it features a physical shop-in-shop or not.

The new Sephora locations will replace Kohl’s previous beauty selection, and are located just inside the front center of the store. There will be approximately 8,500 products from 125 prestige beauty brands including skincare, haircare and fragrance.

Black-owned brands at Sephora

"What is beauty without Black beauty? Its influence is universal. There'd be no cut creases or beat faces without these legendary icons."

That's how Sephora's "Black Beauty is Beauty" spot begins, and it's a sign of how the beauty retailer is trying to incorporate more diversity into its marketing at large. The short film, released earlier this month, highlights the influence of Black culture on beauty, and it prefaces the launch of Sephora's first ad campaign highlighting Black-owned brands, which is set to launch this fall.

While the retailer is committed to offering Black-owned brands more space in its marketing, Sephora is also trying to find the right balance between calling out the niches Black-owned brands serve and emphasizing how their products can also work for people of other backgrounds.

Around the same time that the fall campaign launches, the retailer will release a Sephora Favorites kit featuring only Black-owned brands, with the proceeds going to the Fifteen Percent Pledge, and relaunch its Color IQ foundation matching technology to account for skin tone saturation. The new technology is based on over 10,000 skin tones and matches customers with over 8,000 foundations.

These upcoming efforts are a continuation of Sephora's journey to support Black-owned brands, which more meaningfully began last year when the retailer signed the Fifteen Percent Pledge. Since then, the retailer has rolled out a plan to tackle racial bias throughout its operations, and expects to double its Black-owned brands by year's end. The prestige hair care segment is expected to fully reach the 15% mark by the end of 2021 as well.

In its own way, Sephora is also doing work there to give a boost to Black-owned businesses and startups through its Sephora Accelerate program. The most recent class just graduated in June, with brands like Hyper Skin preparing to begin selling through Sephora soon, and 2022's accelerator program is starting to recruit. Like last year, it will continue to focus on BIPOC-owned and founded brands, as part of Sephora's plan to increase BIPOC representation.

Clean Beauty Brands at Sephora

Shopping for clean beauty products can be tricky as each brand’s definition of clean is as varied as their respective product offerings. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only regulates the beauty industry, notably for adulterated or misbranded cosmetics, and doesn’t approve beauty products before they hit the market. Furthermore, the FDA cannot recall cosmetics, but it can monitor manufacturers that voluntarily request a product recall.

For its Clean at Sephora program, the retailer created a green-and-white seal that helps shoppers quickly identify items that align with the store’s definition of clean beauty. Right now, Sephora’s definition can be applied to skin care, makeup, hair care and fragrance items.
