Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody Men's review

Okay, so, I finally got my hands on a Gamma MX jacket, and since I'm a bit of a bigger guy, I thought I'd share my experience with it.  Hopefully, this helps someone else out there.

First off, sizing.  This thing is tricky.  I usually wear a large in Arc'teryx stuff, but I had to go with an XL in the Gamma MX.  The cut is definitely fitted, which looks nice, but if you've got a bit of a belly like me (I'm 6'0" and around 210 lbs), the large was just too snug.  It pulled across my stomach and was tight in the armpits.  Seriously, if you're built anything like me, size up.  Better yet, try it on in a store if you can.

As for keeping me warm and blocking the wind, it's decent.  I'm not a big outdoorsy person, I mostly wear it for my commute.  It's a "softshell," which I guess just means it's not as heavy-duty as a hardshell.  It's fine for everyday wear, and it blocks the wind pretty well.  I'd say it's comfortable between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  Below 50, I need to layer up with a fleece underneath to stay warm.  The fleece lining in the Gamma MX itself isn't super thick.

Waterproof and breathable?  Yeah, right.  I've never really bought into that whole "waterproof and breathable" thing.  Seems like a contradiction to me.  This jacket is definitely not as waterproof as a hardshell.  It'll probably handle a light drizzle, but I wouldn't trust it in a downpour.  As for breathability, it feels okay when it's cooler out, like around 50 degrees.  I haven't worn it in warmer weather yet, so I can't say how breathable it is then.

A couple of other things: the collar on the non-hooded version is kind of high, and it's annoying.  It's uncomfortable zipped all the way up, and it doesn't look great folded down.  The hood on the hooded version is huge, probably meant for a ski helmet.  Also, the black color shows dirt like crazy.  Even just brushing it with my hand leaves marks.  If you're going to be wearing it outdoors, I'd recommend a different color.  Oh, and the fleece lining sheds a little bit, nothing major, but it's there.

So, overall, the Gamma MX is okay.  It's not cheap, though, and honestly, I think there are other jackets out there that are just as good for less money.  If you're expecting it to be super warm, or completely waterproof, or easy to find in your size, you might be disappointed.
